Song of the Day: Lisa Fischer – How Can I Ease The Pain

Song Of The Day

Today’s SOTD is Lisa Fischer’s “How Can I Ease The Pain”—a classic ‘90s R&B slow-burn that still hits the spot all these years later. Co-written by Fischer and produced by Narada Michael Walden, this stunning ballad topped the US R&B charts for two weeks and crossed over into the pop world, reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. That’s no small feat, especially for a debut single from her only solo album, So Intense.

Here in the UK, the song made modest club chart appearances, peaking at #51 on the UK Dance Chart (Music Week) and #57 on the UK Club Chart (Record Mirror), but proper mainstream chart success there proved elusive. Still, the track remains Fischer’s signature tune, winning her a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1992 and a place in R&B history. The fact that it went from soul playlists to the Hot 100 says a lot about the power of Fischer’s voice and the song’s timeless appeal.

A New Jack Swing Playlist

Playlists, Posts

The New Jack Swing sound was all conquering between the mid 80s to the early 1990s.

New jack swing or swingbeat is a fusion genre spearheaded by Teddy Riley and Bernard Belle.

The style originated from Janet Jackson’s third studio album, Control from 1986.

Here is another curated playlist celebrating thisonce inescapable sound which dominated the charts and the radio and what better way to start the playlist than with the group created by the aforemetioned Teddy Riley; the massively influential Guy and “Teddy’s Jam”.

Album of the Day: Lisa Stansfield – Real Love

Posts, Album Of The Day

Real Love is the second studio album by British singer Lisa Stansfield, released by Arista Records on 11 November 1991. Stansfield co-wrote all songs with Ian Devaney and Andy Morris. Devaney and Morris also produced the album.

Real Love peaked at number three in the United Kingdom and a rather disappointing number 43 in the US where it spent 40 weeks total on the Billboard 200. Real Love failed to replicate the success of Stansfield’s eponymous album “Lisa Stansfield” which reached number 9 on the Billboard 200

Despite this lacklustre showing the album managed to provide Stansfield with two number ones.”Change” the lead off single reached number one on the US Hot Dance Club Songs and “All Woman” was a number one hit on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
The highlight of the album is “All Woman” which is given an incredibly soulful performance by Stansfield that elevates the song to a modern day R&B Classic as enduring as Karyn White’s Superman.

They are other noteworthy tracks on this album such as the dancefloor ready aforementioned “Change” and the dreamy gorgeous “Time to Make You Mine” which is arguably Stansfield’s sexiest vocal performance on any of her albums to day. I find the album a consistently rewarding listen with some stellar vocal performances. It ranks as a solid sophomore album and thats why its today’s ALBUM OF THE DAY!
